Mrabet:
'Marriage with Papers' (1986)
Translated by
Paul Bowles
About
the book
'Marriage
with Papers' constitutes the latest chapter in the long collaboration
between Moroccan storyteller Mrabet and American novelist and
translator Paul Bowles. In the title novella, a writer (whose books
bear the same titles as Mrabet's) recounts the tribulations of a
disastrous union. 'Chico' is a portrait of a wastrel doomed by his own
weak character. 'It happened the way it happened,' remarks one
character, an apt comment on Mrabet's laconic, minimalist style.
Recommended for larger collections of contemporary fiction. -- Grove
