Mrabet:
'The
Beach Cafe & The Voice' (1980)
Edited & translated by Paul Bowles.
About
this Book
The
beach
cafe is kept by a preposterously deceitful old man. The voice talks a
youth into doing its evil work until he destroys it with boiling water
(and gains a bride into the bargain). These two short works continue
the prolific collaboration between Moroccan author Mohammed Mrabet and
his
American translator. If Mrabet's laconic style robs the folkloric
'Voice' of interest, it creates in 'The Beach Cafe' a biting portrait
well worth the price
of this handsome volume.
