Mohammed
Mrabet:
'M'Hashish' (1969)
Translated by
Paul Bowles
A book of 10 short
stories: 'The Canebrake', 'The Kif Patch', 'The Doctor from the
Chemel', 'The Young Man Who Lived Alone', Hassan and the Aghrebia',
'The Sea in the Street', 'Two Friends and the Rain', 'The Datura
Trees', 'Allah's Words' and 'The Kif Cutter's Story'.
The word m'hashish (equivalent in Moghrebi of 'behashished' or 'full of
hashish' (aka 'stoned') is used not only in a literal sense, but also
figuratively, to describe a person whose behavior seems irrational or
unexpected. The tales in this book deal with some of the possible
results, desirable and questionable, of being in that state.
